Homemade Taco Seasoning in a Mason Jar

Tacos are a year-round weeknight dish. They’re a staple in many homes because they're easy to make and always hit the spot. Whether you’re preparing a taco bar for guests or whipping up a few for your family, everyone eating is sure to be satisfied.

To make your next taco night even easier, prepare your very own homemade taco seasoning, which you can store in a mason jar with our mason jar spice lid. With our simple yet flavorful recipe, your tacos will be elevated and taste better than what you get at a restaurant.

Why You Should Make Homemade Taco Seasoning

Why go to the trouble of making homemade taco seasoning? It’s laughably simple to purchase at the grocery store and is relatively inexpensive. But there are plenty of reasons why you should make your own instead:

  • Control the spice - When you purchase a pack at the grocery store, you are beholden to the ingredients a brand has used. You can add something, but good luck removing any spices from a prepackaged mix. When you make your own taco seasoning, you control what ingredients go in, meaning you control the flavor and the spice. Whether you want something with a lot of heat or a milder option that’s kid-friendly, you’re able to control your spice level when you make your own seasoning at home.
  • Make it gluten-free - You can also make a homemade taco seasoning gluten-free, ensuring that anybody with specific dietary preferences or allergies is able to eat your meal. This also applies to other allergies. If friends or family members of yours are allergic to various spices, you can make a custom blend that is safe for everyone to eat.
  • Make it in bulk - If you cook tacos a lot, you probably keep a lot of taco seasoning on hand, or you're frequently busy making a new batch. With our homemade version, you can make taco seasoning in bulk and keep it on hand for whenever you make tacos. Plus, by storing your seasoning in a mason jar, you don’t have to wrestle with a package if you don’t use the entire mix in one go.

How to Use Homemade Taco Seasoning

Our taco seasoning is incredibly versatile and can be used for more than just tacos. Here’s how to utilize your seasoning:

  • Taco meat - Let’s state the obvious: this taco seasoning can be used to season your taco meat. But don’t limit it to just ground beef or chicken. This will also taste fabulous on shrimp, tofu, carne asada, pork, or just vegetables for a vegetarian or vegan taco. Either use the seasoning as a rub to marinate your food, or season your meat while you are sautéing.
  • Dressing - As we mentioned, this seasoning is versatile, and you can use it to make a dressing. Mix it in with ranch dressing to make your very own Mexi-ranch. Put it on top of a taco salad, or give your tacos a creamy texture and some extra flavor.
  • Nachos - If you’re not in the mood for tacos, use this seasoning for a nacho plate. You can, again, use it to season the meat you’re cooking for your nachos, or you can mix it into your nacho cheese to spice the plate up a bit.
  • Dips - This is also the perfect seasoning for taco dips. Whether you’re making a crockpot dip with Velveeta cheese, Rotel, and ground beef, a seven-layer taco dip, or any other dip with a taco flavor, toss this seasoning in for that delicious taco taste.

What You Need to Make Your Homemade Taco Seasoning

Whipping up homemade taco seasoning is easier than you think. You don’t need to grind your own spices (though you can) - you just need some store bought spices on hand and a few pieces of equipment:

  • Spices - You’ll need chili powder, cumin, salt, ground black pepper, oregano, paprika, onion powder, and garlic powder. You can add crushed red pepper flakes if you want some extra heat.
  • Regular mouth mason jar - Since you’ll be storing your homemade taco seasoning in a mason jar, you can mix your seasoning in there, too. No reason to dirty another dish!
  • Fork - You need a fork to mix your spices. You can also use a small whisk if that fits, or any other utensil you prefer to stir with, so long as it is small enough to fit inside a mason jar.
  • Mason jar spice lid - Close your mason jar with our spice lid so you can easily use your homemade taco seasoning while you cook!

How to Make Your Seasoning

  1. Start by measuring your spices. In all spice blends, it’s imperative that you have the correct measurements.
  2. Pour each of your spices into your regular mouth mason jar.
  3. Thoroughly mix the spices.
  4. Use the blend on your favorite taco recipe and store it for next time.

How to Store Your Seasoning

Follow these instructions to properly store your homemade taco seasoning:

  • Keep it in your mason jar - No need to transfer your homemade taco seasoning into a different storage container - just keep it in your mason jar. Secure your mason jar with our spice lid and use the apparatus like you would any other spice jar while you are cooking.
  • Store it with your other spices - Store your homemade taco seasoning just as you would your other spices - in a cool dark place like your pantry or a drawer. When properly stored, spices can stay good for up to four years, so use your best judgment with the spice blend as it will stay good for as many years as your oldest spice has left.
